The solution exists, it just requires people to use Solaris. Which really isn't that bad, it's really one of the most mature and perhaps the[/i] most stable OS out there. It also has extremely mature features. It just requires learning something other than Windows.

With ZFS you can plug in as many HDD as you want, use any type of backplane you want, and you can tell it to be ok with 2 disks failing, or 3. You can divide the pools up or modify them whenever you wish, instantly adding space or removing it. You can instantly declare a drive for striping if you want some data to be faster accessed than other data. Besides the flexibility, it also has error checking for data integrity that no RAID solution to date has.

2) I don't use clipart ever, so I'm not very concerned with OpenOffice having clipart or not.

3) OpenOffice DOES need to be redesigned, but it's not completely for the UI. The code (as per everything I've read) is absolutely horendous and takes enormous amounts of time for new programmers to come up to speed with the project. It needs to be rewritten from scratch, but of course that is an enormous undertaking and not feasible. This leads me to believe the OpenOffice project is doomed and (similar to what windows Vista is doing) will become too complex to be maintained in the near future.

4) Add-on's would be cool, but PLEASE don't use UML (or whatever it's called that Firefox uses). The method Firefox uses is easy to add on to, but it is incredibly slow and bogs down Firefox. IE7 and Opera are both noticeably faster than Firefox. The only thing good about Firefox now (with updated security patches) are the add-ons. The add-on's I also only use for web development, but Opera in contrast has everything I would use for standard browsing already built in, and is lightning fast.

Conclusion: Good thoughts, but OpenOffice definitely needs a facelift and a major reworking of the engine before it's a good replacement for MS Office. MS Office is expensive, but ignoring cost, blows OO out of the water.
